5 quotations

"I was asked earlier if 'I could possibly be any more annoying?' so I've just added 'student of life' to my Facebook bio." Jeremy Drysdale
"If you can't say anything good about anyone, sit right here by me." Said to a young girl by Alice Roosevelt Longworth
"The more highly industrialised the country, the more easily a materialistic philosophy will flourish in it, and the more deadly that philosophy will be. Britain has been highly industrialised longer than any other country. And the tendency of unlimited industrialism is to create bodies of men and women — of all classes — detached from tradition, alienated from religion and susceptible to mass suggestion: in other words, a mob. And a mob will be no less a mob if it is well fed, well clothed, well housed, and well disciplined." T.S. Eliot in 1948

"Every schoolboy hath that famous testament of Grunnius Corocotta Porcellus at his fingers' end." Robert Burton

"I have read somewhere or other, in Dionysius of Halicarnassus, I think, that history is philosophy teaching by examples." Henry St John, Viscount Bolingbroke.

I might be wrong but I think St John said this in his maiden speech in the House of Commons. How much more stupid and ignorant English politicians are now than in Queen Anne's reign. Instead of worrying about diversity we should worry about how well read MPs are.
