Two very shocking stories

This object is a knife. As we learn from reading a 2012-text written by journalist Florence BeaugĂ©, it is a knife found by twelve-year-old Mohamed Cherif Moulay on March 3, 1957, in a dark corner of his house in Algiers’ Casbah. The night before, a group of French paratroopers had entered his family house and tortured his 42-year-old dad, Ahmed Moulay, in front of his wife and his six children, with water, electricity and, at least one knife, before killing him. The knife was forgotten by one of the soldiers and later found and hidden by Mohamed Moulay, 12 years old. It is only in 2003 that the knife will exit the Moulays’ house, when the Algiers correspondent to French newspaper Le Monde brings it back to France to be used as an evidence in the trial for defamation that Jean-Marie Le Pen’s attempted against Le Monde. 5 centimeters long and 2.5 centimeters wide, it is the same kind of knife that was used by the Hitler Youth. It was fabricated by German knife makers in the Ruhr according to the investigation made by journalist Sorj Chalandon. The blade bears the name of J.A. Henckels, manufacturer in Solinger.
On the sheath, one can read J.M. Le Pen, 1er REP.

This is a quotation from this blog. I found it via a very good article on the Le Pens by Claire Berlinski. The original blog post is written by someone on the left who regards the word 'nationalist' as damning, but Claire Berlinski's wonderfully well written description of the FN is itself damning. Claire Berlinski is an admirer and biographer of Mrs. Thatcher.

Marine Le Pen comes from an unsavoury family and milieu. People who agree with her on immigration or the EU, as Steve Bannon, Nigel Farage and probably Donald Trump do, for example do, will overlook this.

The torture described above happened sixty years ago and Marine Le Pen, though her father's daughter, cannot be blamed for his sins, though she can be judged by her associates.

The French, I am sure, regard Marine Le Pen as unappealing and they are right to do so, but she is the weapon they find to hand, as Trump was the weapon American voters found.

As Elisabeth Levy, a well known Franco-Jewish feminist put it
'It is not that France has become Le Penist, reality has become Le Penist.'
The FN is a product of, even a continuation of, the Algerian War, which in many ways was the start of modern French, European and even world history.

If you want to understand why Marine Le Pen is in the second round this from an article in this week's issue of The American Conservative by Scott McConnell explains.
Last year Michel Gurfinkiel weighed conflicting estimates (between three and six million) of the number of French Muslims in the mid-1990s and contrasted them with present estimates. He concluded that the current figure is roughly six million, or 9 percent of the population, and that it is growing at a much faster rate than the French population as a whole. As early as 2010, fully 20 percent of French under 24 were described as Muslim. A more recent poll in the liberal French weekly L’Obs reported that more than a quarter of French youth described themselves as Muslim.
Because the government does not publish statistics about race, some curious researchers have looked at the number of newborn babies screened for markers for sickle-cell anemia, a test given if both parents are of African, North African, or Sicilian origin. The figure has risen from 25 percent in 2005 to 39 percent in 2015. In the Greater Paris region it has risen from 54 percent to 73 percent. One understands why Houellebecq’s right-wing professor says he wants the inevitable civil war to come “as soon as possible.”

  1. Indeed official statistics on race, ethnicity, and religion are illegal in France. However, in an attempt to show the absurdity of the terrorist attack in Nice, French media outlets published that one third of the victims of the attack were Muslim (e.g. In my opinion this statistic should be taken with a pinch of salt because of several reasons: (1) It is a number obtained in a metropolis, France's fifth largest city. There are much fewer Muslims in small-town France or in its rural areas. (2) It is obtained in the south. Again, I suppose, though I don't have the evidence, that there are more Muslims in the south than in the north or the Atlantic regions. (3) The victims were present at a popular event, where economically weaker segments of the population are probably overrepresented. (4) Perhaps the size of the sample does not allow for a reliable extrapolation.
